Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey (90% to 95% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (reduce to 1/4 teaspoon if sensitive to spice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil (for cooking the patties)

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Frying pan or skillet
  • Spatula
  • Measuring spoons
  • Meat thermometer

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the ground turkey, olive oil, maple syrup, dried sage, kosher salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and ground nutmeg. Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix the ingredients until they are well combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the sausage tough.
  2. Once the mixture is combined, divide it into equal portions and shape each portion into patties. You can make them as thick or thin as you prefer, but a thickness of about 1/2 inch is ideal for even cooking.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the canola oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the turkey sausage patties to the skillet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. You may need to cook them in batches.
  4. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and cooked through. Use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature has reached 165°F (74°C) for safe consumption.
  5. Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and let them rest for a couple of minutes. Serve them warm with your favorite breakfast sides, on a sandwich, or crumbled in a salad for a protein boost.

Notes

  • Store cooked patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • For longer storage, freeze uncooked patties separated by parchment paper in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
  • To reheat, pan-fry or microwave until warmed through, ensuring it reaches the proper temperature again.
