Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joes:
  • 1/2 tablespoon olive oil for sautéing the vegetables
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper diced
  • 1/2 medium onion diced
  • 1 whole jalapeño seeded and diced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef the hearty base of the dish
  • 3/4 cup ketchup for that classic Sloppy Joe sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce enhances the umami flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder for depth of flavor
  • 1 whole chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder for a touch of spice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin lends an earthy flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika for color and subtle sweetness
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano adds an aromatic touch
  • 1/2 cup salsa for a fresh, zesty kick
  • 1/2 cup canned corn drained
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Serving Spoon
  • Buns

Method

Cooking Steps:
  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced green bell pepper, onion, and jalapeño. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  2. Add the lean ground beef to the skillet. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, breaking it apart with your wooden spoon, until it is browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, minced chipotle pepper, chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, and dried oregano. Mix thoroughly to combine all the flavors.
  4. Fold in the salsa and drained corn. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will help all the flavors meld together beautifully.
  5. Taste the mixture and season with salt and pepper to your liking. Adjust any spices if necessary for your preference.
  6. Spoon generous portions of the Tex-Mex Sloppy Joe mixture onto your favorite buns. Serve warm and enjoy the burst of flavors with every bite!

Notes

  • Don’t skip the chipotle pepper! It adds a depth of flavor that elevates the dish.
  • Adjust the heat level by using more or fewer jalapeños depending on your preference.
  • Letting the mixture simmer helps to deepen the flavors, so don’t rush this step.
