Ingredients

  • 1 cup water (lukewarm, ~110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (granulated)
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 3-4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ cup butter (unsalted, softened)
  • 1 unit egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter (unsalted, melted)

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stand mixer (optional)
  • Baking sheet
  • Kitchen towel
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Step 2: Mix the Dough
Add the softened butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined. Gradually add the all-purpose flour, starting with 3 cups. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Step 3: Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Step 4: First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Step 5: Shape the Rolls
Once risen, punch down the dough to release air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  6. Step 6: Second Rise
Cover the rolls with the kitchen towel again and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes until they puff up.
  7. Step 7: Preheat the Oven
While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Step 8: Bake the Rolls
Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Step 9: Cool and Serve
Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm for the best experience!
