Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly (three sticks)
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking pan (9x13 inches)
  • Cooling rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease your 9x13 inch baking pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the chocolate cake mix, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, cocoa powder, and flour until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
  6. In a small bowl, combine additional flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and melted butter to create the crumb topping. Mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the cake batter.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, use reduced-fat cake mix and substitute applesauce for half of the butter.
  • To make it gluten-free, use a gluten-free cake mix and flour blend.
  • Add chopped nuts or shredded coconut to the crumb topping for texture.
