Ingredients

For the Beef and Broccoli:
  • 1 lb flank steak very thinly sliced into bite-sized strips
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil (or vegetable oil), divided
  • 1 lb fresh broccoli cut into 6 cups of florets
  • 2 tsp sesame seeds optional garnish
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger grated
  • 2 tsp garlic grated (from about 3 cloves)
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 6 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce (or GF Tamari)
  • 3 Tbsp packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper a pinch
  • 2 Tbsp sesame oil

Equipment

  • Wok or Large Skillet
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula or wooden spoon

Method

Directions:
  1. Begin by slicing the flank steak into very thin strips. This ensures quick cooking and keeps the meat tender.
  2. In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Mix well and let it sit for about 15 minutes. This will help to tenderize the meat and infuse it with flavor.
  3. In a large wok or skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until they are bright green and tender-crisp. Remove the broccoli from the pan and set it aside.
  4. In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Once hot, add the marinated beef in a single layer, allowing it to sear for about 2 minutes without stirring. This helps to develop a nice brown crust.
  5. Stir in the grated ginger and garlic into the beef, cooking for an additional minute until fragrant.
  6. Combine the hot water, remaining soy sauce, brown sugar, and black pepper in a bowl. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
  7. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and bring to a gentle simmer. Add the broccoli back to the pan, stirring to combine all the ingredients. Allow the sauce to thicken, about 2-3 minutes.
  8. Drizzle the sesame oil over the dish, giving it a final stir. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for garnish.
  9. Serve your Beef and Broccoli hot over a bed of steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal. Enjoy the burst of flavors in every bite!
