Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, Italian seasoning (if using), grated Parmesan cheese, smoked paprika, and salt. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.
- In another bowl, whisk the large egg until well beaten. In a third bowl, place the white whole-wheat flour. This will be your breading station for the chicken nuggets.
- Take a piece of chicken, dip it into the flour, shaking off any excess. Next, dip it into the beaten egg, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, roll it in the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring it’s well-coated. Place the coated nugget on a plate and repeat with the remaining chicken pieces.
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes. This step is crucial for achieving that perfect crunch.
- Once preheated, arrange the chicken nuggets in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Be sure not to overcrowd the basket; you may need to cook them in batches for the best results.
- Cook the chicken nuggets in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through. They should be golden brown and cooked through (the internal temperature should reach 165°F or 75°C).
- Once cooked, remove the nuggets from the air fryer and let them cool slightly before serving. Pair them with your favorite dipping sauces, such as honey mustard, barbecue sauce, or a zesty ranch dressing.
Notes
- Make sure the chicken pieces are uniform in size for even cooking.
- If you find the coating isn't sticking well, try adding a touch more flour to the chicken before dipping in the egg.
- Don’t skip preheating the air fryer; it’s essential for achieving a crispy exterior.
- Feel free to adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences.
